Nintendo fans provide for a convenient demographic when video game to film adaptations are produced.

The film portrays fan-favorite characters Princess Peach, Mario, Luigi, Toad and Bowser, king of the Koopas, in a story of friendship, family, perseverance and bravery as the protagonists attempt to overcome the conflicts presented by Bowser.

“I think Super Mario Bros. was a big part of my childhood because it was always a fun game to turn to when there was nothing else to do,” eighth grader Adel Chen said. “Seeing it come out as a movie would be really cool, since I've only ever seen it as a game. Plus, the games all have varying plots depending on the decisions you make, and the movie will have a set plot already, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens in comparison to the actual games.”

Worldwide, 58 million copies of Super Mario Bros. have been sold. Due to the game’s popularity, many fans have been ecstatic about the film adaptation of a classic.

“It’s cool that they want to bring video games to life. They want the younger kids to play their games too, so I think it’s a cool idea.” sophomore Jazlyn Espinal said.

“I think it’s great,” Spanish teacher Ms. Salcedo said. “I think that all the video games that I used to play in my childhood coming to life makes me kinda a little nostalgic and excited to go watch it.”

Overall, the amount of film adaptations of video games has increased within the past few years. Films such as “The Angry Birds Movie 2” and TV shows including “Resident Evil” have seen commercial success, incentivizing producers to create film adaptations of video games in the future. Additionally, many video games such as Super Mario Bros. have a loyal and dedicated fan base that present the ideal demographic for a film adaptation.
