Love is "On Air"

By Julia Esposito and Rachel Priest

As Valentine’s Day rolls around, many anticipate watching their favorite romantic comedies. Although more recent movies like “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “The Kissing Booth” have made a leap to the top of many fans' watch list, some feel the holiday is not complete without its nostalgic staples from the 90s and early 2000s.

The trait about these films that may seem irresistible to viewers is their swoon-worthy nature. Especially for those spending the holiday without a significant other, it leaves some hopeful that love does exist. Additionally, with similar tropes and characteristics in the classics, it creates the idea of a “perfect companion” to many of those longing to find “the one.” Actors like Heath Ledger, Mark Ruffalo, Matthew McConaughey, James Marsden and Patrick Dempsey helped cultivate that image and left many viewers loving their performances.

“I’ve always loved Patrick Dempsey in 'Grey’s Anatomy,' but after watching the movie ‘Maid of Honor,’ I have a newfound admiration towards him as ‘the boy-next-door’ character! I’d prefer him over Noah Centineo any day,” senior Adrianna Gomes said.

Many students at NHP adore romantic comedies, especially during Valentines Day.

Another factor that leaves many fans smiling are the actresses that star in these movies; they bring a certain ambience to the production. Many of them play bright and bubbly characters which attract the audience. For instance, Kate Hudson from “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days” and Jennifer Garner from “13 Going on 30” are still talked about today for their roles and iconic outfits on social media. However, the audience is also captivated by actresses that possess an alternative type of role such as Julia Stiles from “10 Things I Hate About You.” In the case of Stiles’ character, some admire realistic views and relate to her initial disgust at the thought of falling in love.

“I love early 2000s rom coms. When I watched ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 days,’ I was encapsulated. It was so real and so classic, and I adored it,” senior Ava Geigle said.

Whether you are watching with your significant other or spending the day binging with your galentines, romantic comedies can add sweetness and lightheartedness to a holiday filled with love. And thanks to streaming services, many of the classic films are available to watch anytime.
