New Hyde Park Memorial finished its Senior Week with Student Teacher Day. Seniors worked with their teachers across the school’s departments to teach NHP’s underclassmen. Student teachers took the opportunity to incorporate both fun and academics in their lesson programs as a reflection on their time at NHP.
“It’s so great to be back in the classroom and to share the joy of AP Chem with the new class,” senior Safiya Hamdani said.

“I loved participating in Student Teacher Day,” senior Areej Zaidi said. “Student teaching for Mr. Claussell was a hilarious experience and overall super memorable, especially since Shirley and I were Mr. C's first ever student teachers. We did a Kahoot about Mr. C., played music and towards the end of the day even had the students do karaoke. My favorite part of the day was hearing Alex Grant sing his heart out to ‘Let It Go’ on karaoke. Student teaching showed me how each age group can differ so significantly, as I ended up teaching nearly every grade throughout the day.”
“I think it is amazing to be alongside such an amazing person and teacher such as Mr. Brusca. I feel like it allows me to see the day in the life of a teacher and learn better,” senior Jaiden Thomas said.
NHP’s students also took back a positive experience from Student Teacher Day. Many expressed their gratitude towards the student teachers as well as satisfaction with the activities the seniors chose for their respective classes.

“The student teachers demonstrate an expertise in the class they are teaching in,” junior Hong Yu Deng said. “They are able to engage the class in various activities. In my precalculus class we played Pictionary and they got the whole class yelling at each other because we couldn’t decide who said the answer first.”
“I think that having student teachers is a fun experience and it is a nice break from typical teaching. Having student teachers right before the break allows us to destress,” sophomore Sitatafeef Islam said.
“Student teacher day was truly an engaging experience. The seniors made the day fun by balancing school with other activities and I really got a kick out of it. It’s really my favorite day in Senior Week because everyone around me seems to be enjoying themselves and it's a great time to bond,” junior Isabelle Do said.
