By Tina Torre

New Hyde Park’s athletes are currently participating in the winter sports season. The excitement surrounding the beginning of a new season allows athletes to reflect on the fall and consider what they can do to improve, along with what they have achieved.

This year’s fall season consisted of many accomplishments for New Hyde Park’s athletic department, such as girls varsity volleyball, girls varsity soccer and varsity football all making their respective playoffs. In addition to these teams’ advancements, several athletes received Section VIII New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) awards. All-County awards were bestowed on commendable students who achieved an All-County status during their season, which recognized their athletic performance and character as a team player. NHP had eight athletes who received All-County awards, three All-County Honorable Mentions and eight other athletic awards.

New Hyde Park’s boys varsity volleyball team had All-County player, James Marzano, this fall season. Marzano is a senior and an outside hitter. Given his athletic abilities and willingness to help his teammates improve, he effectively took on his role as team captain. Marzano also participated in a volleyball game for All-County seniors, which served as an enjoyable ending to his last season playing for NHP.

“I sincerely enjoyed the opportunity to take on more of a leadership role and help my teammates become better players, all the while having them push me to play to my fullest potential. The senior game was lots of fun, and there was lots of amazing talent. I just know that I wouldn’t be getting this award without the overwhelming amount of faith that my teammates had in me,” said Marzano.

“Being a recipient of All-County is an attempt to display how much my late coach, mentor and friend Chris Comito meant to me and this community. Everything Coach Comito, as well as the rest of the coaching staff from junior high to varsity level, taught me on and off the field sparked a never-ending fire to finish what they had always wanted for all NHP football players: to play every day like it was our last and leave it all on the field,” said senior Eric Orbon.
